From across the smoke filled room peers the piercing stare of one "Monsieur Mustachio" .. This pinstripe pussycat has a nasty reputation for shooting first and asking questions .. well .. questions never seem to cross his mind. His reputation for cruelty exhibited on the cutest of critters can only be matched by his legendarily shady business dealings. Ever ready to keeps his wits about him, this cool headed cat takes his creamer without coffee. The Making of this Painting: Hours of blood sweat & tears .. Ok, maybe not the blood, or even the tears, but I might have had one drop of sweat bead up on me brow! All of this and for what!? A kink in my neck and a headache from staring at this computer screen. And of course this great little work of art that inspires a laugh or two from someone out there who has any laugh left in them that is! This little painting will be shipped in a reinforced envelope for a safe delivery, although insurance is also an option if you're the squimish type, or if you're one of those who distrust the government, a spy-proof tinfoil wrapper is also an option! About the Artist: I have lived in Colorado most of my life, and over four years ago I decided to make the Beautiful Rocky Mountains of Estes Park my home. My Artwork has been exhibited in several private local Artist Showings and I have also kept an ongoing presence in the Renegade Art Gallery, which is an independant group of Contemporary Artists who reside here in the Estes Park valley. My Work also continues to find a place within the homes of many Private Collectors Worldwide. Including pretty much all over Europe and Canada. What I have become known for is the Depth of Meaning and often Harsh almost Primitive Treatement and Reshaping of Delicate Subject Matter and the Emotional Response it Inspires. My Explorations in Paint include Surrealism Dreamscapes, Nude Figures, Abstract Portraits, Cat & Crow Caricatures, as well as Landscapes of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. If I could say anything in short as to my Mission here in this Place and Time as an Artist I would sum it up as follows: To Reveal to others the Great Depth of Experience I myself have Found by Peering into the Vast Complexity and Endless Beauty that makes up All Creation. I can merely mimick poorly what Greatness I have Seen Beyond and Felt Within. 1960s VINTAGE LES DEMI DIEUX Semi-Nude Male BENNETT COWBOY MUSCLE Beefcake This vintage* semi-nude male portrait by LES DEMI DIEUX dates from the early 1960s and features handsome model Richard Bennett posing at the shore in a cowboy hat and denim jeans. Richard Bennett Several male nude images of Bennett were featured on the covers of and within many issues of Young Physique and Demi Gods magazines throughout the early 1960s. Unlike the studio's usual greaser-era New York street youths, Bennett, who was the photographer's most popular model, was a classic artistic poser with the maturity and chiseled beauty of a Renaissance sculpture. Les Demi Dieux Surprisingly contemporary in his approach to both the male physique and photographic technique, the man that called himself "Les Demi Dieux" (which is French for "the demigods") was little known among collectors until after his death. His work appeared in beefcake publications like Demi Gods and Young Physique in the early 1960s, featuring popular models like Jerry Albanese, Richard Bennett and Vince Perri. But the images we have found to be most intriguing are those of Brooklyn street hooligans posing between their Buicks and against the chain links of the local basketball courts, or country youths posing deep in the back woods. Measuring approximately 2-by-2-inch vintage photograph is printed on glossy stock and is in good condition. Quality and clarity are very good. OUR "BIGKUGELS" WATERMARK ON OUR SCANS: Sorry folks, we had to do it. After years of providing sizable and detailed scans for our bidders we have found it necessary to add our watermark to the scans. Please know that the "BigKugels" watermark on our auction scans is not on the original photographs and is simply added to prevent unlawful duplication by other sellers. And if you see another seller with a "duplicate" or "copy" print of a rare image, be sure to inquire about its origin.* REPRODUCTION FORBIDDEN: The images included with our auctions are of works in our collection and are provided only for reference to prospective buyers. Or an original, a reprint or a copy? It is crucial for you as a vintage photography collector to know what these terms mean and what you should ask an eBay seller when you are uncertain about an item's age or origin. For more information about the terms we use to identify the age and quality of the photographs in our listings, please see our "About Me" page. VIEW OUR ITEMS: Each week we list several noteworthy vintage photographs under the mature audiences category in compliance with eBay's guidelines regarding photographs containing male frontal nudity. These items are easily accessible from the complete list of our auctions. BigKugels Photographic, Inc. welcomes questions and inquiries from collectors of vintage photography. FARRINGTON ELWELL (1874-1962) Robert Farrington Elwell was born August 24, 1874 in Boston, Massachusetts. His 24-year-old father, Albion Elwell, was from New Hampshire, and his 23-year-old mother, Alice Farrington, was from Massachusetts. He was an only child. They lived at 5 Oakville Avenue. His father was a stone mason. He studied at a local technical school to become a civil engineer, which taught him skills in drafting and lettering. He began his career as a letterer and graphic artist at The Boston Globe newspaper. In 1892 he met William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody when his famous Wild West Show visited Boston. Elwell illustrated some of the advertising and publicity that Cody arranged with The Boston Globe. He and Cody became good friends. According to the artist,"I was associated with Cody for many years in as close a relationship as father and son." Cody invited the young artist to visit his Montana ranch during the winter to escape the frozen New England weather. In 1896 he began to contribute some of his training as a civil engineer to the managament of a devolpment project at Cody's Ranch. In 1897 he married his wife, Mary Ellen Taylor, who in 1882 had emigrated from England with her parents at the age of seven. At first they lived at her parents house at 66 Rosemary Street in Needham Township, MA. In 1898 their first child, Alice M. Elwell was born and three years later Grace I. Elwell was born. Through his association with Cody, he became acquainted with Frederic Remington, Diamond Jim Brady, Teddy Roosevelt, Chief Iron Tail, and Annie Oakley, who taught his daughter how to shoot. During the first two decades of the 20th century he illustrated several books about soldiers, Indians and cowboys for young readers, such as Born to the Blue, The Boy Who Won, and The Girl From Big Horn Country. On September 12, 1918 he reported for draft registration in the World War. He was recorded to be tall, medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair. His occupation was listed as magazine artist and writer. He did not serve in the military because he was 44 with a wife and two daughters. In 1920 he lived in a home that he owned on Haven Street in Needham, MA. His daughters Alice M. Elwell (21) and Grace I. Elwell (18) both lived at home. During the 1920s he drew black and white interior pen & ink illustrations for Harper's, Century Magazine, American Magazine, and The Outing Magazine. He also drew interiors as well as painted covers for pulp magazines such as Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly, Adventure, West, Short Stories, and Frontier Stories. By 1930 his daughters had married, and he and his wife had found a winter home in the South West in cattle grazing land. They lived on Camp Wood Road, near Bagdad, Arizona, just West of the Prescott National Forest. He painted scenes of the Old West and he continued to sell freelance illustrations to pulp Western magazines, such as All Western, Ace-High, Short Stories, and West. During World War II he was 69, which was too old to register for military service or even volunteer. After the war he left his primary residence in Massachusetts and moved year round to Wickenberg, Arizona, where he worked as an art teacher for Remuda Ranch. He also made paintings of the Old West for art galleries. In the 1950s he illustrated interior stories for the popular mainstream magazine, Arizona Highways. R. Farrington Elwell died in Phoenix, AZ, at the age of eighty-eight on October 1, 1962. Source: David Saunders, Field Guide to Wild American Pulp Artists

This could happen in the next two weeks, Watch my site daily to see if that buyer is you. Oregon Buckaroo Riding the range searching for lost cattle. This is another in a series of western paintings I'm doing for a special show this fall. I hope to have over 15 new oil paintings for sale all in the western theme. This quick little sketch was painted this morning on the dirtiest, roughest piece of scratch paper I had. However, it is 140 lb watercolor paper of excellent quality. I love taking some old piece of paper I would normally toss and make something beautiful out of it. My wife thinks I'm nuts. But after all this is just a sketch for a future oil painting, so I didn't really care about how messed up the paper was. It had so many marks on it I could barely make out my drawing. But as luck would have it, it turned out to be a winner and I think all of the scratch marks added to its beauty. I often tell my students to mess up their paper before they start a painting so that the clean white paper doesn't intimidate them. It works. If you look close you can see the old watermarks, etc. Read what a few of my collectors have to say: This is a masterpiece! I can't believe it's mine!!!! Vintage Cowboy Horse Gun Old West Bronze Sculpture Art Deco Home Decor Figurine Condition : This sculpture is in a very Good condition. Bronze Dimensions with Marble Base:Height 14" x Width 17" Marble Dimensions: Diameter 10" Height without base: 13" Weight :23 LBS Inventory : 32-Y4127623 A seasoned cowboy is casually patrolling the area, when suddenly something catches his attention. He pulls down on his reins and brings the horse about. His horse's head pulls back. He leans forward and looks out towards the noise. He is dressed in a shirt, chaps, hat and boots, giving him the look of a good ole fashioned sheriff. 100% bronze and handmade, this two-toned brown patina sculpture was cast using the "Lost Wax Method" and mounted on a black marble base. Bronze Sculpture Casting Tour The process of bringing a bronze sculpture to life using the lost-wax method is something you'll appreciate after taking this tour- Enjoy The Lost Wax Casting Process Here Artist original clay sculpture is nearly ready for the foundry. Note the artist is still adding the finishing touches. Most sculptors prefer to work with clay or wax; some however, do use wood and other mediums. Here the finished original clay is now complete. The sculptor will take it to the foundry now, get a bid then begin the first stages of the lost wax process. The first step can be shocking for some as they begin to decide how this original will be cut up. In order to prepare the original clay sculpture for molding, it will be dissected by cutting the clay with wire and by cutting the armature with a saw. The armature is what helped support the clay in place while the artist was creating it. Note the registration marks which later in the process will serve to realign the parts. Shown here are the sections of the original clay sculpture after having been dissected. Now the various parts of the original are carefully mounted on clay plugs before the rubber mold material is applied. The clay plug later serves as a pour spout for the mold. As you can see now they begin painting the latex rubber onto the original together with the clay plus that's been added in layers. Notice the shim line that will alter serve as a separation line for dividing the mold in half. A lock and tab system has been applied (see the edge) so that the mold will be able to be opened and closed securely. Once the rubber mold has been completed, a plaster or fiberglass "mother" mold is applied to the outside which will preserve the integrity of the rubber mold. The "mother" mold is now complete, the next step is to separate the two halves of the mold and remove the original from inside. The next step is to remove the artists' original and reassemble the clean, empty mold. Now a way pattern will be poured by building several layers of the hot wax within the rubber mold. A layer is poured, allowed to dry until there is about a 1/4 inch thick wax pattern made of the artists' original. It is very important to note that the wax pattern is a hollow duplicate of the artists' original. Now the wax pattern is taken to the wax "chasing" room of the foundry. Here much time is dedicated to the restoration of the wax pattern to the exact likeness of the artist original. All bubbles and imperfections are "chased" away in this process. Eventually there will need to be a way for the hot, molten bronze to funnel its way into a ceramic type mold, shown here the wax pattern is sprued and mounted on a wax cup. The red spures serve as gates and vents later in the process. Notice the wax trees are then taken to what is known as the slurry room where the time consuming process of building the ceramic shell will begin. First the wax tree is dipped into a slurry tub and coated. The slurry itself is basically made up of colloidal silica. While it is still wet, the tree is coated with the first layer of sand which is made up of fused silica. This process takes about 8 days to complete. Each day it is dipped in slurry and once again coated with the silica sand. The silica sand used goes from very coarse to very fine beginning to end. Eventually the shell will be approximately 1/2 inch thick. The complete, dry shell (remember it still contains the wax pattern inside) is placed in the burnout kiln where the shell is cured and the wax pattern is melted out, hence the term "lost wax". Each time another number in the edition is cast a new wax pattern must be made from the mother mold which is again lost in the process. Now the shell is ready to receive the molten bronze. It is poured at a temperature of about 2,000 *F. After the bronze is cooled, the shell cracks on its own accord and is manually removed from the bronze. This could also be called the "lost shell" method if casting. The sculpture is now "metal on the floor". Any gates and vents are removed from each section of the sculpture and the pieces are then welded back together. One can realize the tremendous time and labor involved just up to this point. Once the pieces of the sculpture have been reunited, or welded back together, the weld lines are then tooled out and any imperfections in the metal are corrected. This takes place in the metal room where the critical talent of the artisan's transforms the parts into a hollow bronze duplicate of the original clay model. The completed metal sculpture is then heated with a torch in order to make it ready to receive patina. The patina process is the result of chemical and heat applied in layers. This is an art in itself and requires years of training to master. No two patinas can turn out exactly alike. It can take anywhere from 8 to 16 weeks for one casting depending how busy a foundry is. In conclusion, remember that as an example if there are going to be 100 bronze casting in the edition, this whole process is done over and over for each number in the edition. They are truly original castings. The only step that can be "re-used" in casting another number in the edition is the "mother mold" in the very beginning. Once all numbers have been cast (the amount of numbers is decided by the artist before casting begins), the mother mold is destroyed. inkfrog terapeak i000000
