*****NICE BUD HELBIG, CA ETCHING***** This is an original etching by Montana's Cowboy Artist Bud Helbig (1919-2002).This etching is of a buffalo herd. Helbig spent a lifetime studying Buffalo on the Moiese Bison Range in Western Montana. A traditional or realist painter of contemporary scenes of the American West, he was honored by election to the Cowboy Artists of America in 1972. He was born in Butte, Montana, and from 1969, lived in Kalispell. From the time he was a child, he wanted to be both a working cowboy and an artist, and the former role he assumed as a youngster growing up on a horse ranch in western Montana. There were no art schools in Montana, so he enrolled in a Federal Art School correspondence course, which increased his interest in art. He worked as a bridge builder for the Milwaukee Railroad to earn money for further study and then went to art schools in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota. This schooling was interrupted by several years in the military during World War II followed by living in Chicago, where he attended the American Academy of Art. He studied there with Bill Mosby and worked as a commercial illustrator. He stayed in contact with his friends in the West through frequent return trips and finally moved back to Montana, where he became a full-time fine artist of all mediums except acrylic. This rare piece is titled Montana Bison Etching size is 4" x 10" Mat size: 9 3/4" x 15 3/8" Etching number 21/50.
